vJoy is a versatile device driver that acts as a virtual joystick, bridging the gap between non-joystick devices and applications that require joystick input. Originally developed as a replacement for PPJoy, this utility software allows you to translate keyboard input into joystick input, making it ideal for programs that require physical user input on Windows.
Implemented as a virtual device for Windows, vJoy does not represent actual hardware but provides a simple interface for users to modify the provided sample code. The app can be easily incorporated into your device as is or customized to your preferences. It offers three branches to choose from, depending on your needs.
The most recommended branch is the Incompatible (to PPJoy), also known as vJoy 2.x. This branch is highly advanced, fully configurable, and secure. It supports up to 16 virtual devices, making it suitable for complex applications. If you're looking for a simpler replacement for PPJoy, the Compatible/Fixed branch is a stable option. It offers one device with eight fixed axes and 32 buttons, but it is not configurable, and its axes cannot be re-mapped. The Compatible/Configurable branch allows you to set the number of buttons and select the needed axes, but re-mapping the axes requires making small changes in your code.
The installation process of vJoy is straightforward, although it may take some time and occasionally fail. Once installed, you can launch the app directly or from the Start menu. It provides two virtual joysticks, each configurable with 30 inputs. You can assign a button to each type of joystick input by selecting the key from the combo box or inputting it from the keyboard using the three-dot button.
vJoy is a valuable tool for gamers and users of applications that require joystick input. While it can be used as is, it also offers configuration options to suit individual needs. Although the installation process may be time-consuming, overall, it is a helpful solution for emulating joystick behavior.
